We’ve been playing with the Retroid Pocket 2 for a couple of weeks now, and we’ve received a lot of questions about how it performs with cloud gaming. So, let’s find out!
The cloud gaming platform we used is Nvidia GeForce Now, because that’s what we use for pretty much all of our devices. It comes with Steam Link installed already, but we will save that for another post.
To start, you’ll need to find a source to download the APK from because Nvidia GeForce Now isn’t available to download on the Play Store on this device.
Once installed, it took forever to load, we’re talking 3-4 minutes before it started displaying games. It showed the interface and let us login, but every time we loaded it up, it took the same 3-4 minutes.
As soon as your games are available, it’s pretty much straight sailing from there. Chose a game and watch it start to load… slowly…
For whatever reason, loading is painfully slow. Booting up Valheim took about 5-10 minutes which we have never seen before on GeForce Now, so there’s clearly issues. Most games wouldn’t load at all. They’d start the process then throw us straight out.
So, if you’ve got this far, and you’ve found one of the few games that load, how does it play?
Not well.
Input is slow and laggy, and the whole experience is just a mess. At a push, something turn based might be playable, but anything that requires realtime input is just unplayable.
We’ve put together a video to show how it all looks, but to sum up, Nvidia GeForce Now is not going to be your go to gaming platform on the Retroid Pocket 2.
We didn’t expect it to be, but we thought it was a fun experiment!
